Syrians Hamsters
Q: What size wheel should I buy for my Syrian?
A: The minimum size wheel for a syrian is 8 inches in diameter however some larger syrians will need a wheel which measures 11 inches in diameter.
Chinese Hamsters
Q: Can I keep two chinese hamsters together?
A: Chinese hamsters are now seen as solitary animals as pairs very rarely work out and if kept together they will often cause serious harm or even kill each other. There are only a few rare cases of chinese hamsters living together their whole lives.
Q: If chinese hamsters cannot be kept together then why do shops sell them in pairs?
A: Often Chinese hamsters are mislabled as 'Chinese dwarf hamsters' and so many shops believe that as dwarfs can live in pairs then so can chinese hamsters. If you see a shop selling them in pairs try to advise them against this as it will often lead to the hamsters fighting or killing each other.
General Questions
Q: Are hamsters suitable pets for under 10's?
A: This is something that is often debated between many people but generally people believe that a child under 10 can 'own' a hamster but they must not be expeted to feed/clean/playwith the hamster as many children will become bored after just a few weeks of this. If you buy one for them then you MUST be willing to do most of the work. Remember a hamster is not a toy, it is a living animal no different to a dog or cat they need responsible owners who will care for them their whole lives and children under 10 cannot always be this.
Q: What's your favourite hamster food to use?
A: Harry Hamster! My hamsters love this food and it is very cheap to buy in most places. It does not contain too many seeds or nuts like many foods do and it has a good variety. I will usual add other things to the mix though such as cat biscuits, dried mealworms and porridge oats.
